Rep. Jack Jenkins (D-GA) Goes Country in Nashville
NASHVILLE, TN - Representative Jenkins made a special fundraising appearance at a meeting of the Nashville Songwriters’ Association International, making a keynote address about the tax legislation the NSAI is trying to get introduced, and on the issue of intellectual property theft. Excerpts follow:
“According to the information I have here, under the current laws, the tax for selling the rights to songs you have written or personally own can range anywhere from 35 to over 40% because of the way our Republican government has it currently classified. That money should be classified under capital gains, where it would be taxed only 15%. Stock brokers selling pieces of paper they never created in the first place only get taxed that 15%, and it’s high time that you get the recognition you deserve. It’s time to end this injustice, and I intend to fight that battle on the hill when the next budget bill comes around.”
“Intellectual property theft is a big problem in our country. People are stealing music, movies and other things from our creative artists such as yourselves. These people need to realize that the average money a songwriter makes a year from writing is under $5,000, and that every extra download detracts from that. We need to create regulations for the control of that property, and that’s not going to happen with Warder and his cronies in office. Remember, wade through the bull, and support the Democrats in this coming election.”
