CHICAGO, Illinois – Representative William Reynolds spoke at a Planned Parenthood convention concerning his continued support for the pro-choice movement in the United States of America.
Excerpts follow:
“As a Christian, I have to admit that I have thought hard on the subject of abortion. I’ve had to spend some one on one time with God to discuss the issue. But I’ll tell you what I realized, and I hope you’ll agree with me. A woman has the right to make any and all decisions about her body. The right to privacy is sacred and not something our government has any business interfering in.
That’s not something the Republican Party believes, I’ll tell you that much. I recently decided to put my name on the Reproductive Rights Amendment submitted by my worthy colleague Representative Swift. Now, I don’t expect this amendment to go anywhere so long as the Republicans control the House. I doubt this legislation will even be allowed out onto the floor of the House for an up or down vote. It’s too controversial, because Republicans don’t want Americans to realize that they don’t support a woman’s right to privacy. They don’t even have the courage to take a stance, even if that stance is the wrong one. But I’ll stand up here today and tell you that the Democrats see things a bit differently. The Democratic Party has the courage and fortitude to take a stand on the abortion issue. That’s why you’ll see the Democratic Party introducing legislation like the Reproductive Rights Amendment and you’ll see the Republican Party let it languish. Help me take back Congress for Americans. Help me get the government out of our lives and out of our business.”
