BOSTON, M.A. – Senate Minority Leader Cody Shea (D-NC) was on hand at another fundraiser for the DNC in the northeast, this time sponsored by the partisan group Irish American Democrats. There, Shea spoke about his pride in his heritage and about how it has shaped the man he is today.
"We are a people who have known conflict, and hardship, and struggle, for countless generations. Yet, we have an uncanny knack for turning our fortunes, for always being able to see the silver lining. We worked hard; we overcame adversity, racism, and the exploitation from others. Now, in the modern day, we can be proud of who we and where we came from."
"Yet, our story is not over. We have our own legacy, our own heritage to pass down to our children and their children after them. We must continue to work hard and to work together, to insure that the things we value, the things we consider important, carry on into the future."
When asked by audience members about the possibility of war with Iran and / or Syria, Shea responded with a comparison to the Civil War.
"When Irish immigrants came to the United States during the Civil War, they were drafted right off the boat into the Union army. With no idea of what they were fighting for, whom they were fighting for, or what their future held they were rushed off to a war they didn’t understand. In 2003, the United States rushed to war with Iraq based on a lie, a lie that cost thousands of American lives."
"I will not allow another Republican administration to dictate who lives and who dies, who fights and when. I will demand of the Warder administration, and of the opposition members in the Senate, a clear understanding of what our plans are in the Middle East should we dedicate ourselves to another conflict there. I will demand a clear objective of what we want to accomplish, when we want to accomplish it, and what our plans are once it has been accomplished."
"With the help of my fellow Democrats in the House and Senate, and most importantly with your continued help and support, we will make sure the mistakes made by Republicans of the past will not be repeated by Republicans of today."
