CHICAGO, Illinois - Representative William Reynolds spoke briefly to the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce today, in what both parties described as a prelude to longer discussions in future events. Business leaders in Chicago have been worried by several of the actions taken by the Republican Party as of late, notably the creation of a semi-public monopoly to replace Medicare that passed the House in a tight partisan vote recently.
Excerpts follow:
“There are some very basic principles of how you handle an economy, which I’m sure you all know better than I. One of the biggest ones is that if you want an economy to perform well, you get the government out of the way. You don’t create state-run companies or monopolies. Our own history and the fate of every communist regime on the planet show us that much.
Arguments can be made that healthcare should not be a normal part of the economy, and arguments can be made that it should. I’m not here to argue either point. What I am here to say is that I think it’s ridiculous that the Republicans would ram a bill down the throats of the American people that mortally wounds insurance companies and creates an unstable state-run monopoly. The Republicans want to set up a system through which graft and fraud is going to run rampant. After Warder and his cronies get finished with the insurance companies, it won’t be long before they decide that there’s another area of the economy that needs fixing.”
