CHICAGO, Illinois - Representative William Reynolds spoke at a fundraiser sponsored by the NAACP in Chicago. The NAACP is expected to support numerous fundraising events for the Democratic Party throughout the course of the pre-election and election season. Representative Reynolds is expected to make several further appearances at such events.
Excerpts follow:
"My friends, I’m sure everyone here knows by now that only 10% of African Americans consider themselves Republicans in this country. Consistently, well over 60% of blacks think of themselves as Democrats and the remainder, while labeling themselves as independent, consistently votes Democrat. So, 90% of us are voting Democrat and working against the oblivious Republicans and the institutionalized racism they blindly support. And yet we see the Republicans still in control and still running our great country into the ground. I’ll tell you one big reason that this is true: black people aren’t voting. Black people have less money, we have less influence, and we stand the most to lose from the actions of the Republicans. Yet, we’re not getting to the polls.
I say we work to take back this country. I will support an effort in Congress to make Election Day a national holiday so hard working, poor Americans can actually get out to the polls. And I will support my party, my country, and my people in sustained efforts to get out the vote. The Republicans have been voting themselves money for the past decade. It’s time that we showed them that ordinary Americans are sick of their tax dollars going into the pockets of those people who have the most influence back in Washington, D.C. The government should be helping and supporting you, not wealthy businessmen who keep voting to send our sons and daughters off to war.”
