AMES, Iowa: The Iowa Democratic Party, working with liberal activist group Moveon.org, recently sponsored a fundraiser for the coming Congressional elections. Congressman Ethan Hall (D-IA) was the keynote speaker at the Iowa State University event. An excerpt of Congressman Hall's comments follow:
You know, when Rick Warder won the Republican nomination - I was happy.
*boos*
No, no. Hear me out. There was finally a Republican that said they were going to take on the right-wing of that party. He said he would run a sensible foreign policy. He said that he would attack the deficit with a vigor we haven't seen since, well, Bill Clinton. And frankly friends, though I supported Donovan O'Connell, I thought we can't lose. The Bushites were on the run and America would be on the mend, whether it was a Republican or a Democrat in office.
Then... the real Rick Warder showed up.
*boos*
The Rick Warder that sees keeping the poor from home ownership as a means to deficit reduction! The Rick Warder that sees jumping into war with Iran and Syria as sensible foreign policy! The Rick Warder that has embraced the same right-wing agenda that ran the Bush Administration. Enough is enough! We need your help tonight and the rest of this term so we can take back Congress and halt this insane, anti-democratic agenda!
Now, the Republicans are going to tell you that this is the same negative campaigning that lost the Democrats Congress and lost Donovan O'Connell the White House. So, you know what? I'm going to tell you exactly what Democrats like myself, Cody Shea, and Dennis Retton are going to do if you put us into the majority.
First, we're going to reverse the worst of President Warder's budget cuts. Secondly, we're going to roll back tax cuts for the wealthiest of the wealthy, while holding on to middle class tax cuts. Thirdly, that means we can cut the deficit by a greater margin than President Warder can even concieve of. Lastly, we're going to give Americans a solid healthcare plan that they can be proud of, that will slash costs for businesses to stay competitive in a strong economy.
That's what we're going to do and why I'm asking you to donate to the DNC today! Thank you all very much!
