Sterling speaks to Christian Coalition
Oh my, it is so good to be here one more time!
Thank you all for welcoming a guy from California down to Mississippi! Here is what I belief, I believe that together you and I, my party and this organization will form a new coalition what will carry us to victory in the years to come.
Here is the ugly truth, the Republican leadership, under the direction of President Warder has forgotten you. You’ve been left for dead, tossed aside, thrown away and remember no more by the republicans. The Grand Old Party has decided on a new course, and you aren’t involved. This President in his last election happily ran his campaign on the fact that this organizations no longer in his coalition for the future. However, it’s not time to fall down and given in, its time fight back. The bible says that the “kingdom of God suffers violence, and the violent taketh by force.” Its time to fight for your family, fight for your faith, its time to put on the whole armor of God to insure your voice is heard again.
Today, my message is clear; there is room in the Democratic Party for this organization and your voice will be heard. Today, I extend an olive branch of fellowship. The Democratic Party welcoming door is open and the light is on in the window, waiting for your return.
Almost eighty years ago a great democratic President whose legacy will live eternally, FDR, formed a coalition of new deal democrats composed of small farmers, the "Solid South", Christians, big city machines, labor unions, northern African-Americans, Jews, intellectuals and political liberals. In similar fashion, this revitalized Democratic Party is forming a new coalition that will lead us through the 21st century and our party as room for you.
The truth is our values are your values. The values that we learned at Wednesday bible study or Thursday night choir rehearsal and on Sunday morning are the same basic tenets my party holds today. Values like fairness, equality and justice and compassion are the tents that have guided my party over the last 100 years.
We’re not a bunch elitist and ultra liberals, the Democratic party is a party that beliefs in the teaching of Jesus and abides by that oldest commandment, “love others as you love yourself” We’re the big tent party, we have room to disagree and we encourage spirited debate on the issues. We may not always agree, but you’ll never be shut-out and your opinion will always he listened to, as together we shape policy.
In closing, I know many of you are leery of a democrat coming to your conference to talk to you. This reminds me of the story in Acts chapter 9. Soon after the day that the apostle Paul got his call from the Lord and reversed from his wicked ways, he traveled to Jerusalem to meet Jesus’ disciples. What the bible says about that encounter is probably the way that many of you few me and my party today. The bible says in the 9th chapter of Acts the 26th verse, “And when Saul (Paul) was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.”
I understand that many years of lies by the Republican leadership has distorted the true values of my party, but here is my promise: I will continue to tell people of faith the true tenets of my party. will continue to encourage Christians to join us in our new coalition for the future and I will continue to push for the causes of this organization. Friends, as was once said by a great democrat “The olive branch has been extended the door is ajar, the light is burning in the window”, it is time to come back home
