Minor Campaign Event DAY2: Poughkeepsie, New York, New England/North East Location: Mid Hudson Civic Center. Topic: Education. Audience: Dutchess County general population, strong minority presence.
Celebrating Martin Luther King Day, Congresswoman Jackson-Cortez today began her campaigning in her hometown of Poughkeepsie, New York. She led a rally at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, speaking out about the need to strengthen education from grade-school to college to improve the power of the nation and the choices of all its citizens.
As Jackson-Cortez spoke about the need to strengthen ties between business and the school system to provide vocational training and so provide an alternative to the dangerous lifestyles some youth were drawn into, a local African American mother stood up and accused Jackson-Cortez of having no idea how hard it was for families in the inner cities.
“It’s hard,” said Jackson-Cortez. “I know it is, and if you are the hard-working mother I believe you to be you already know what to do when things get hard: dig deep, work harder, and overcome. That is what we will provide for today’s youth – a chance to work hard and change their world. We do not offer hand-outs that do nothing to address deep problems, but with President Warder’s education spending increase we are offering a real hand-up to any who need it.”
The woman stayed on stage with Jackson-Cortez for the rest of the night and afterwards was heard to praise the congresswoman’s determination to truly help the inner cities. Even with this interruption, this makes an excellent start to what has been dubbed by some members of the press as “the Million Republican March.”

DNC Major Newspaper Ad, New York Times North East, Full Page $1,170,000 "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore; Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"Remember when these words used to mean something?"Republican Leader Rick McLaughlin wants to 'seal the border'. Republican Senator Uxbridge has called for a massive, multi-million dollar security fence to be built along the Mexican border. All the experts say this fence would be ineffective and a waste of money. That doesn't stop the Republicans from wanting one anyway. Republican William "Whitie" Power's speech " Keeping our Kinsmen Klean" in Texas should stand as an example to all Americans of the sort of positions the Republican Party advocates. The Republicans voted to reduce aid by 50% to foreign countries, but propose we spend huge sums of money to keep the immigrants fleeing poverty out. What the Republicans forget is that America is a nation founded on immigrantion. Every new wave of immigrants to this country have been greeted with hostility, but they have all been incorporated into our great culture just the same. The Republicans claim they're trying to fight Terrorism, but they're really just afraid. Show them that you're not afraid. Show them that there is never any excuse for discrimination or racism. Stand up and vote Democrat for safer, reasonable border dispute solutions that keep terrorists out while letting immigrants in. Come Election Day, tell the Republican Party that you're tired of paranoia and hostility. Vote Democrat for reasonable immigration policies and a strong, positive America." DAY 3 GOP Ad NE TV Ad: $585,000 Man: "I'm one..." Narrator: "A lot of people in America are." Woman: "I'm one." Narrator: "However, they can't say it openly. They don't think it's polite." Couple: "So are we." Narrator: "The Republican Party has a confession to make to America." CHAIRMAN MCLAUGHLIN: "It's true. The Republican Party is fiscally responsible. And like a lot of Americans, that means we're concerned about how your tax dollars are spent! In Washington, D.C., the Republican Party just approved the most fiscally responsible budget in decades. We've cut over 90 billion dollars from the deficit, given you permanent tax relief and ensured important areas like education and our military were well funded." Narrator: "Be fiscally responsible! Minor event: Open field, Shanksville, Philadelphia
Those who arrived early in the dreary rain of the open field where the ill-fated hijacked plane crashed in 2001 saw Congresswoman Jackson-Cortez kneeling on the sodden grass apparently in prayer. What we reporters saw that they didn’t was that she had been there over an hour. This was not a publicity stunt.
When the congresswoman spoke to the crowds sitting beneath the shelters provided it was of international security. She spoke of a dear friend who had been on flight 93, and paid tribute to the town that had been close to where it had been brought down. She then turned to the government’s current actions in the Middle East.
“Some question our work in Iran and Syria, and our stationing troops in allied nations. I want you to consider Iran’s recent actions in detonating bombs on the Afghan border. This was the border of a country where our troops and our contractors, where our people, are working to rebuild the nation. NO government does something like that without thinking the ramifications through. We cannot and will not ignore this any more than you would ignore someone attacking the factory or office where you work or the playground your children use.”
It was the strangest campaign stop I have ever seen, but as I watched several of the attendees begin talking to religious leaders she’d invited, and Congresswoman Jackson-Cortez return to a spot in the field and resume praying, I have to say it was also the most moving.

Major Endorsement: Former President Bill Clinton North East $5,850,000
Former President Bill Clinton has left the West Coast and is now campaigning furiously on the East Coast. Clinton seems to have tucked into his work with a will, and has toured across all of New England, through New York and Pennsylvania, and even stopped off in Maryland. Clinton, in the North East, is a beloved figure and has gathered huge crowds to his speeches and events. These events have been free of charge, thanks largely to huge sums of money being doled out by the Democratic Party.
Clinton spoke on the need to preserve American Values and keep "radicals like Kenneth Green and Orenda Naaz Jackson-Cortez out of our homes and out of our schools." Clinton, a long time supporter of free trade, also spoke of the need to deal with the China problem and maintain America's reputation throughout the world.
Bill Clinton is a major celebrity across the country, but his status in the North East is near to legendary. When Clinton appeared in Boston, crowds spilling out the doors of the convention center obstructed traffic and had to be reorganized and positioned by Boston Police. This took a little while as Johnathon Bailey, Boston Police Officer put it, "Why I wahnted to see tha President mahself. Ol' Bill's wicked awesome."
Clinton, as on the West Coast, is also working to help register voters throughout the North East and rally the Democratic base to organize volunteers.

New Voter Registration North East Region $2,925,000
The Democratic Party has been working throughout the North East to get hordes of new voters registered before the coming House elections. The Democrats have been getting involved at a very grassroots level: going door to door and attending local church services as well as visiting community centers.
One recent event that garnered a lot of support in the New York area was a campaign event which featured the slogan, "Register to vote and sign this pledge to come out on election day and Bill Clinton will shake your hand!" Former President Bill Clinton was indeed on hand, as part of his North East tour, shaking hands and smiling his easy going grin.

Rally Volunteers North East Region $5,850,000
The Democrats continued their campaigning blitz in the North East this month, registering legions of new volunteers to help organize campaign events and get voters to the booths on election day.
Representative William Reynolds told reporters, "Hey, it's not so much of a drive as solving a problem. We had all these people lining up outside our offices wanting to volunteer. We couldn't let em stay out in the cold. We let them volunteer and gave them a mug of cocoa. It seemed the thing to do."

National Ad - New England Region: $585,000 dollars "Fiscal Responsibility"VOICE OF JACK JENKINS: I'm Jack Jenkins, former colonel in the U.S. Army Rangers, and now a congressman from Georgia. I've seen a lot of things in my time, but nothing like the last ten years of Republican Rule. They've shown the United States the biggest deficit in history.JACK JENKINS: They've taken 5 billion dollars of your money, and in three years time thrown it at a corporation who was going to build a new radio for the military. That radio was never finished, and that 5 billion dollars was wasted with no return on the investment.JACK JENKINS: And they've refused to aid in the recovery of one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States.JACK JENKINS: And now they're telling you that they're beacons of fiscal responsibility. Increasing Defense Spending on projects that are wildly over budget is not responsible. Neither is cutting family spending so you can increase the defense budget while claiming you've made a responsible budget. Neither is abandoning your citizens when they need you most. Who stopped that irresponsible Defense Bill? Who has repeatedly called for an end to government waste, and an increase in family values? Who led the relief efforts in the South in the wake of Hurricane Katrina? The Democrats. Leading the Charge to a Better America. Use your vote on Election Day, and Do Your Part to make America great again.
