Mr. Speaker,
Our job as United States Representatives is to do what is in the best interest of our nation. Many of us have a different view of what that might be...however, I assure you that a majority of us agree that the American dream is a good start.
First of all, I defy anyone to say the American Dream is not attainable. I, myself, am a product of the American Dream and stand here as an example of the classic Rags-to-Riches American tale.
As the son of an Irish Immigrant, I grew up in the inner city. My father had no education, but he was very intelligent. He was able to make the best of life, and the best of our situation. His desire to succeed gave me unrelenting ambition and a clear set of goals.
So, I went out into the world, received an education and now stand before you as the Majority Leader of the United States' House of Representatives.
How did I do it? I took control of my life. I set clear goals and paved my own way. I achieved the American dream by owning my own destiny. This, Mr. Speaker, is my goal for all Americans.
By taking control of your destiny, you can own the world. Invest in your own education, and the education of your children and it will pay off. Invest in you own economic situation, and that of the country. Invest in your future, your children's future and the future of our nation.
Most importantly, own your future. The Government offers many tempting proposition, but my father had a saying. "If I can't do it myself, the Government won't do it any better." And he was right. The government doesn't know you, so how can they help? Leaning on the Government will only get you so far, and will inevitably get you stuck.
Own the American Dream - own your own destiny.
I yield.
