Oil slick spreading along California coastline from the Los Angeles Times
LONG BEACH, CA - A tanker operated by Unocal, the Santa Paula, Calif.-based subsidiary of Chevron Corp., caught fire for unknown reasons, exploded and then sank at a distance of roughly 60 miles from Long Beach, Calif., which was its destination port. The Liberian-flagged ship reported engine difficulties before departing from the Persian Gulf port of Qatar, leading engineering experts to believe that one of its boilers may have detonated. The tanker, which has a capacity of 150,000 barrels of oil, has at least spilled out an estimated 15,000 barrels and is expected to continue releasing oil into the ocean as the wreck sinks toward the ocean floor. The entire, 286 man crew of the tanker is presumed dead.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reacted to the tanker spill, describing it as a "horrific tragedy" and calling on all public services to take immediate action, within their power, to mitigate the consequences. All Californian beaches south of Santa Barbara were ordered cleared until further notice. Los Angeles Police Department helicopters have been flying over the area, taking photographs and attempting to ascertain the extent of the spill. The U.S. Coast Guard has been deployed to the area. President Rick Warder is reportedly in talks with Secretary of Defense Avery Adams on exhausting all possibilities to deal with the dangerous slick. "We're going to do everything we can," President Warder said.
