Goodwin Attends Kansas Faith Alliance Fundraiser
(Minor Fundraiser)
Representative Hank Goodwin (R-Wichita) attended a fundraiser held in Topeka by the Kansas Faith Alliance last night. There, he spoke about the important role of faith in the public sphere:
"That great Kansan Dwight Eisenhower once said, 'Our form of government has no sense unless it is founded in a deeply felt religious faith, and I don't care what it is.' Ike would define this 'deeply felt religious faith' as 'our faith in the deathless dignity of man, governed by eternal moral and natural laws.' This statement recognizes that the foundation of our government is that we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights. As Eisenhower suggests, this does not mean that there is one correct faith for all Americans or that the state need establish any specific religion. It merely means that our system of individual rights, freedom, and democracy owes itself to a faith in the idea that mankind has a unique dignity and status upon which no government may encroach.
"I promise that as long as the people of Kansas continue to give me the honor of representing them in the Congress I will support the important role faith plays in our great American experiment."
The Kansas Faith Alliance* is a grassroots organization devoted to helping Kansans of faith become full and active participants in shaping their government. Other speakers at the fundraiser included the founder and president of the Kansas Faith Alliance, the Reverend Rick Lee, and noted columnist and author Sarah Nyack.
*In case anyone is confused, I completely made up this group. I'm hoping to exploit the loophole in campaign finance laws whereby contributions from imaginary groups are completely unregulated...
