Named after great great grandfather confederate General William "chain 'em up" Power, Billy Bob or "whitie" as he's known to his friends has represented the great state of Texas carrying on his family's proud tradition of each generation of Power's representing that state since the establishment of texas statehood. That same great great granfather was a famous General on the Confederate side of the civil war and is perhaps best known for the ambush at cripple creek valley where it is estimated that upto 15,000 cherokee Indians were overcome while migrating to a new reserve by a 68 man strong militia led by the General. This victory is still annually celebrated in the town of Slaveburgh in northern Texas. Known for his fire-brand right-wing politics, outspoken Christian views and fondness for regularly threatening liberal opponants with ' pistol whuppins' and referring to Democrats as ' the unpure', Power is seen as a one of the more eccentric characters on capitol hill.
Power first burst on to the national political seen in 1963 as the tearaway son of a unremarkable texan senator. in the weeks before the kennedy assasination power was controversially quoted on national airwaves as having said that he didn't '....want no pompous papist mick down here tellin' all y'all what y'all ought to be doin' in god's own country, i ain't standin' for that and my daddy ain't neither....'.Power remained a controversial figure throughout the sixties, combining his study of geology at the University of Fort Worth (specialising in mineral deposits) with remarkable, attention grabbing, radical outbursts on the issues of the day. In 1965 power grabbed the headlines by announcing that Roy Orbison was a 'Godless communist' following the release of his hit song 'working for the man'. Power continued to attack all things liberal and left leaning and was famously arrested in conneticut in 1966 for tipping vietnam war veterans, protesting against the war from their wheelchairs, calling them 'cowards' and 'enemies of jesus'. Away from politics, Power's colourful private life was also in the public eye from an early age. Marrying at the age of twenty to his once removed cousin Martha. They went onto have a total of 14 children all while Power continued his trail blazing way in politics.
Power's brother though is perhaps what can be only described as somewhat of a black sheep. After is 9th stint in rehabiliatative treatment in 1982 for his chronic cocaine and alcohol abuse has since recovered admirably and is now widely tipped to be Alabahma's next govenor and is renowned at the state's last survivning crusader in favour of expanding capital punishment to juveniles and restricting the union movement to"where it belongs.....with the slanties in red China". His press secretary later said what the proposed Govenor meant to say was "I'm all for the family".
In 1976, citing ' the crying cowardly shame of that whuppin' we got in the orient' as one of his main motivations, Power followed in the footsteps of his recently retired father and ran for senator of the state of Texas. On a platform of zero taxation on oil profits, compensated by double taxation on non-christians as well as accelerated preperation for what Power cryptically referred to as 'the reckoning' he was electeted with an unprecedented 98% of the vote. Allegations of ballott stuffing were vigourously denied and never investigated due to the inconclusive, widely reported and mysterious 'autonomous tractor' accident that took the life of Texan electoral inspector Lawrence Liberalli.
Power's speech advocating the incarceration of popular singer song writer Bob Dylan calling his work as that of the devil as well as declaring it to be 'mind poison'. Power quickly found his feet in the senate and went on become one of the most colourful and animated speakers in the house with speechs on employment(the famous "lets make those boys work" speech of '83 and the equally eye catching speech on 'bleeding policy'
of central American nations in '84) A littany of scandals have littered Power's career yet he seems to emerge each time relatively unscathed. The most notable of these include the Diego sweathshop scandal(1985), The Naked Night in New Orleans scandal of 1987 as well as possibly the most threatening scandal of the emergence of vast bank accounts in the notorious senator's name in Manuel Noriega's Panama,all failed to bring Power's career to an end. His rock solid electoral support combined with a crude, enigmatic and charismatic character saw the senator fight off all challenges to his authority including mutterings of Klan and other right wing connections.
More recently Power was heavily criticised for his erratic behaviour on the morning of september 11th 2001. Power was observed running through the halls of capitol hill in a panicked state declaring that 'satan had the power all along and that we are all doomed, the reckoning is upon us.' Other reports suggested that Power was observed on his knees lamenting that 'this was not part of the deal osama'. Aides of the senator later attributed this behaviour as 'exhaustive shock exacerbated by events of the day'. Power later declared that he was temporarily 'blinded by the power of dark forces'. on doctors orders Power returned to his native Texas in order to recuperate. During this period power's further erratic behaviour received national attention as he comandeered three units of the texan national guard in order to barricade a backwater border town against what he referred to as the 'onslaught of the mohammadals' and the eventuality of 'the final reckoning'.
Power continues as a controversial figure in national politics and received worldwide attention for his outrageous 'jew conspiracy' speech on the United Nations during the build up to the war on Iraq. His most recent anti-immigration speech beforethe senate entitled 'Keep our Kinsmen Klean' also drew much critical attention. Power considers himself "a true texan" and perhaps likes to model himself as the antithesis to his arch nemesis Oprah Winfrey of whom he has been heard as referring to as "the whore of babylon". The seventy two year old Republican senator continues to enrage and enliven U.S. politics.
